Museums

The Andaman Islands have a rich historical background, and there is much to learn and understand about them. Museums on the islands help us connect with the islands' history and understand things that are unique to Andaman. This page is now focused on the various museums in the Andaman archipelago. Port Blair has the majority of the major museums. A visit to the various museums on the islands should be on your to-do list for family and children. The museums will not take long to visit and will provide you with additional information about how the islands came to be.

Zonal Anthropological Museum

This anthropological centre, which was founded in 1975, is dedicated to the life and culture of the native Andaman tribes. The museum displays for tourists tools, clothes, handicrafts, art & crafts, pictures, and other tribal items. It tells the story of all six tribes who once lived on this island and how they still live with little or no contact with the rest of the world. Because there is little exposure to the tribal areas of the Andamans, if you want to learn more about the Andaman tribes, this is the ideal place to learn about their lives and history.

Naval Marine Museum Samudrika

This museum houses an extensive collection of shells, fossils, corals, and a few species of colourful fish from the seas surrounding the islands. It is operated by the Indian Navy and features five galleries devoted to the history, geography, marine life, and anthropology of the Andaman Islands. The museum is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with entry closing at 4:00 p.m. It is located in Haddo and is closed on Mondays.

Chatham Saw Mill

The Chatham Government Saw Mill, founded in 1883, is Asia's oldest and largest operational saw mill. The age of this saw mill, its operation, and the manner in which it is presented to visitors are all amazing and leave the visitor speechless. The Chatham Saw Mill is a historical site, but this is true for almost all museums. What distinguishes it from other museums in Andaman is that it is a perfect combination of wood, art, and culture. Inside the mill, there is a Forest Museum that displays a variety of decorative Padauks, Marble, Peauma, Gurjan, Satin Wood, and wooden furniture, among other things.

Kalapani Museum

This is a museum that is privately owned. Through photos, paintings, and models, this museum explores the history of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. At the end of the museum tour, a short film about Veer Savarkar is shown. The museum depicts the history of British rule and Japanese occupation during WWII. This museum is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Fisheries Museum

The fisheries museum houses 350 different types of marine life. It displays specimens of various aquatic creatures ranging from small fish to large sharks and whales. The museum displays a variety of shells, corals, and skeletal remains of marine creatures. The remains and samples are preserved in glass and chemicals, and it is not recommended that any of the items displayed in the museum be touched. The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 04:45 PM, with entry closing at 4:00 PM. It is located near the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex and is closed on Mondays.

Science Centre

A place that will captivate school-age children. The centre presents scientific facts in a modern and entertaining manner. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., except on Mondays. This museum is located on the way to Corbyn's Cove Beach in the Good Will Estate.
