A guided telescope session under one of India's rarest night skies — Havelock sits far enough from any city that the Milky Way, Saturn's rings, and Jupiter's moons are all visible to the naked eye and up close through the eyepiece.
Havelock Island sits at 12 degrees north latitude, surrounded entirely by ocean, with almost no artificial light pollution reaching the sky. On a clear night, thousands of stars invisible from any Indian city fill the view, and planets are bright enough to resolve real detail through a telescope — rings, moons, cloud bands, the kind of thing most visitors have never actually seen with their own eyes rather than in a photograph.
No astronomy background is needed. A guide walks you through the session at a relaxed pace — what you're looking at, how far away it is, and what's actually happening in the eyepiece — without it ever feeling like a lecture. Groups are kept small so everyone gets real time at the telescope, not just a quick look over someone's shoulder.
Meet your guide as the sky fully darkens. The telescope is already set up and aligned by the time you arrive.
Before the telescope comes out, your guide points out major constellations and the Milky Way itself, visible directly overhead away from any artificial light.
Everyone gets a proper turn at the eyepiece — Saturn's rings, Jupiter and its four largest moons, star clusters, and nebulas depending on what's up that night.
Your guide will help you hold your phone camera up to the eyepiece to get a real photo of what you're seeing — it works better than most people expect.
Timing: sessions start at 7:30 PM and don't conflict with daytime activities — plenty of guests combine a morning dive or kayak trip with stargazing the same evening.
Best season: October to May, when skies are clearest. New moon nights give the darkest sky and best views of faint objects, though sessions still run around the full moon — the moon itself is genuinely worth viewing up close through the telescope.
